Complete checklist for FBA inbound shipment labeling compliance covering FNSKU barcodes, suffocation warnings, poly bag requirements, box content information, and country-specific variations for US, AU, and JP FBA.
Every product sent to Amazon FBA must be identified with a scannable barcode that Amazon's fulfillment center systems can read to receive, store, and ship inventory correctly. Amazon offers two barcode options: the FNSKU (Fulfillment Network Stock Keeping Unit) and the manufacturer barcode (UPC, EAN, or JAN). The FNSKU is a unique barcode assigned by Amazon to each product-seller combination, meaning that your inventory is tracked separately from other sellers' inventory of the same product. The manufacturer barcode allows Amazon to commingle your inventory with other sellers' inventory of the same product, which can reduce labeling costs but introduces the risk of counterfeit or damaged units from other sellers being fulfilled under your listing.
LNH31 Global strongly recommends that all Taiwan brands use FNSKU labeling rather than manufacturer barcodes. The commingling risk is particularly acute for Taiwan brands building reputation in new markets; a single counterfeit or defective unit fulfilled from another seller's commingled inventory can generate a negative review that damages your listing's conversion rate and Brand Registry standing. The FNSKU label must be a 1D barcode (Code 128 format) with the FNSKU number printed in human-readable text below the barcode. The minimum barcode size is 1 inch wide by 2 inches long (25mm x 50mm), and the barcode must have a quiet zone (blank space) of at least 0.25 inches (6.35mm) on each side.
FNSKU labels must be printed on removable adhesive labels and applied to a flat surface on the product packaging where they will not wrap around edges or be obscured by shrink wrap seams. The label must be scannable by Amazon's handheld barcode readers, which means it must have sufficient contrast (black bars on a white or light-colored background), no reflective or glossy lamination that could cause scanner glare, and no damage or wrinkling that distorts the barcode. Taiwan manufacturers should invest in a thermal transfer label printer (such as Zebra ZD420 or TSC TE200, costing USD 200 to USD 500) to produce high-quality FNSKU labels in-house rather than relying on inkjet or laser printing, which often produce barcodes with insufficient print density for reliable scanning.
When selling the same product across Amazon US, AU, and JP, each marketplace assigns a different FNSKU even if the product ASIN is the same. This means you need separate FNSKU labels for inventory destined for each marketplace. A product with ASIN B0123456789 will have FNSKU X001ABCDEF for US FBA, FNSKU X002GHIJKL for AU FBA, and FNSKU X003MNOPQR for JP FBA. Mixing FNSKU labels between marketplaces will cause receiving errors, stranded inventory, and potential account suspension. Implement a color-coding or labeling zone system in your warehouse to prevent cross-marketplace FNSKU errors: for example, blue labels for US FBA, green labels for AU FBA, and red labels for JP FBA.
For sellers enrolled in Amazon Brand Registry with a GS1-registered UPC or EAN, Amazon offers a "virtual bundle" option where the manufacturer barcode can be used with the "Transparency" serialization program to authenticate individual units without FNSKU labeling. However, this approach requires purchasing Transparency codes at USD 0.01 to USD 0.05 per unit, applying unique serialized codes to every unit, and managing a more complex serialization workflow. For most Taiwan brands, standard FNSKU labeling remains the simpler and more cost-effective approach unless they are already using serialization for anti-counterfeiting purposes.
Amazon requires suffocation warning labels on any product packaged in a poly bag (plastic bag) with an opening of 5 inches (12.7 cm) or more. The warning must state: "WARNING: To avoid danger of suffocation, keep this plastic bag away from babies and children. Do not use this bag in cribs, beds, carriages, or playpens. This bag is not a toy." The text must be printed in a font size of at least 24-point (for bags with a circumference of 114 cm or more) or 18-point (for bags with a circumference of 77 to 113 cm) and must be prominently visible on the outside of the bag. The warning must be in English for US FBA, English for AU FBA, and Japanese for JP FBA.
Poly bag specifications for FBA are strictly defined. The bag must be made of transparent material so that the barcode is visible through the bag without opening it, must have a thickness of at least 1.5 mil (0.038 mm) to prevent tearing during handling, and must be properly sealed (heat sealed, tape sealed, or self-adhesive closure) so that the product does not fall out during storage and fulfillment. For products with sharp edges or protrusions, the poly bag must be thick enough to prevent puncture (typically 2.0 to 3.0 mil). Bags must not extend more than 3 inches (7.6 cm) beyond the dimensions of the product, as excess material can jam conveyor systems and automated sorting equipment in fulfillment centers.
Additional product prep requirements vary by product category. Fragile products (glass, ceramics, electronics with screens) must be bubble wrapped with at least 2 layers of bubble wrap or placed in a corrugated box with appropriate cushioning material so that the product passes a 3-foot (91 cm) drop test without damage. Liquid products must be sealed in a waterproof bag with a minimum capacity to contain 120 percent of the liquid volume, and the cap or closure must be sealed with shrink wrap or tape to prevent leakage during transit. Products sold as sets (such as a set of 3 kitchen utensils) must be packaged together in a single poly bag or box with a label stating "Sold as Set -- Do Not Separate."
Expiration-dated products (food, supplements, cosmetics) have additional labeling requirements. The expiration date must be printed in MM/DD/YYYY format for US FBA, DD/MM/YYYY format for AU FBA, and YYYY/MM/DD format for JP FBA, and must be visible on the outside of the packaging without opening it. Amazon will not accept products with less than 90 days of remaining shelf life for US FBA, 90 days for AU FBA, or 60 days for JP FBA. Products within 50 days of expiration will be automatically disposed of (destroyed) at the seller's expense. Taiwan exporters shipping perishable or expiration-dated products must carefully calculate lead times to ensure sufficient shelf life upon arrival at the FBA fulfillment center.
Products that require Amazon prep services (because the seller has not prepped them in accordance with Amazon's requirements) will be prepped by Amazon at the seller's expense. Amazon's prep service fees are USD 1.00 to USD 2.20 per unit for US FBA (depending on the type of prep required), AUD 1.50 to AUD 3.50 per unit for AU FBA, and JPY 150 to JPY 350 per unit for JP FBA. For a shipment of 1,000 units, prep service charges can add USD 1,000 to USD 2,200 to the inbound shipment cost. Performing prep at the factory in Taiwan or through a third-party prep service (costing USD 0.30 to USD 1.00 per unit) is significantly more cost-effective than relying on Amazon's prep services.
Box content information tells Amazon exactly which products and how many units are in each shipping box, enabling faster and more accurate receiving at the fulfillment center. Amazon offers three box content methods: 2D barcode on box labels (most efficient), manual entry in Seller Central, and "No box content information" (which incurs a per-unit processing fee of USD 0.15 per unit for US FBA and equivalent fees in AU and JP). The 2D barcode method generates a unique box label for each box in the shipment that encodes the box contents, and Amazon's receiving team simply scans each box label to record all contents without opening the box. This is the fastest receiving method and is strongly recommended.
Shipping labels for each box must include the Amazon FBA shipping label (generated in Seller Central when the inbound shipment is created), the carrier shipping label (from UPS, FedEx, or the contracted freight carrier), and a "Do Not Open" sticker if the box contains multiple ASINs that should not be separated. The Amazon FBA shipping label includes the shipment ID, box number (e.g., U001 of U025), destination fulfillment center code, and a scannable barcode. Each box must have exactly one FBA shipping label on the outside, placed on a flat surface and not on a seam or opening. Do not place FBA shipping labels inside the box or under packing tape.
Box dimensions and weight limits are standardized across FBA marketplaces with minor variations. For US FBA, each box must not exceed 25 inches on any side and must not weigh more than 50 pounds (22.7 kg), except for single oversized items that may exceed these limits with prior arrangement. For AU FBA, the weight limit is 23 kg per box and the maximum dimension is 63.5 cm on any side. For JP FBA, the weight limit is 15 kg per box for standard-size products and 40 kg for oversized products, with maximum dimensions of 50 cm x 60 cm x 50 cm. These variations mean that Taiwan manufacturers packing for multiple marketplaces must use different box configurations for each destination, which requires careful warehouse management.
Pallet shipments to FBA follow specific requirements that vary by marketplace. US FBA accepts standard GMA pallets (48 x 40 inches / 121.9 x 101.6 cm) and ISPM 15-treated wood pallets. Maximum pallet height including the pallet is 72 inches (182.9 cm), and maximum weight is 1,500 pounds (680 kg). Each pallet must have 4 FBA pallet labels (one on each side) and must be stretch-wrapped with clear plastic wrap. AU FBA uses standard Australian pallets (1165 x 1165 mm) with a maximum height of 1.8 meters and maximum weight of 750 kg. JP FBA uses JIS T11 standard pallets (1100 x 1100 mm) with a maximum height of 1.7 meters and maximum weight of 1,000 kg. Taiwan exporters shipping palletized goods must verify the correct pallet size and labeling specifications for each destination marketplace before loading.
Cross-dock versus direct fulfillment center shipments affect labeling requirements. When Amazon assigns a shipment to the Amazon Partnered Carrier program or when using Small Parcel delivery, boxes are shipped directly to the assigned fulfillment center and require only standard FBA shipping labels. When using LTL (Less-Than-Truckload) or FTL (Full-Truckload) shipping, which is common for large shipments from Taiwan, boxes may be routed through an Amazon cross-dock facility before reaching the final fulfillment center. Cross-dock shipments require additional carrier routing labels and Bill of Lading (BOL) information. Working with a freight forwarder experienced in FBA inbound shipments (such as Flexport, Freightos, or local Taiwan forwarders with Amazon expertise) ensures all labeling and documentation requirements are met for the specific shipping method used.
Amazon US FBA has the most mature and well-documented inbound requirements, but Taiwan sellers should pay particular attention to the following US-specific rules. All products must include "Made in Taiwan" or "Made in ROC" country of origin marking as required by US Customs (19 CFR Part 134). Products in certain categories (children's products, electronics, food) require additional compliance documentation uploaded to Seller Central before inventory can be received. Amazon US has recently implemented stricter enforcement of box weight limits, and boxes exceeding 50 pounds are now automatically flagged for rejection at the receiving dock, resulting in the entire shipment being held until the overweight box is identified and repacked.
Amazon AU FBA, while smaller in scale, has specific requirements that differ from the US. All products must display prices in AUD (no USD pricing on packaging), and packaging must comply with Australian Consumer Law requirements for consumer guarantees. GST-inclusive pricing is standard in Australia, meaning the displayed price includes the 10 percent GST. Product labels must include the Australian importer's name and address. Expiration dates must be in DD/MM/YYYY format (day before month), which is the opposite of the US MM/DD/YYYY format. Taiwan manufacturers producing identical products for US and AU FBA must ensure different label versions are applied for each marketplace. AU FBA fulfillment centers are located in Melbourne and Sydney, with receiving appointments required for palletized shipments.
Amazon JP FBA has the most distinctive requirements among the three marketplaces. All product labels, instruction manuals, and packaging text must be in Japanese. The Amazon JP barcode format uses JAN (Japanese Article Number, equivalent to EAN-13) as the manufacturer barcode, though FNSKU labeling follows the same Code 128 format as US and AU. JP FBA fulfillment centers are located across Japan (Ichikawa, Yashio, Sakai, Tokoname, among others) and are known for extremely strict receiving standards. Boxes with any damage, improper labeling, or non-compliant prep will be refused and returned to the seller at the seller's expense. JP FBA weight limits are lower than US FBA (15 kg vs 22.7 kg for standard boxes), requiring more boxes per shipment.
The most common FBA labeling errors made by Taiwan exporters, based on LNH31 Global's client experience, include applying the wrong marketplace FNSKU to products (sending US FNSKUs to JP FBA or vice versa), using glossy or reflective label materials that cause scanner failures at receiving, placing labels on curved surfaces or seams where they wrinkle and become unscannable, omitting suffocation warnings on poly-bagged products, exceeding box weight limits (particularly common when packing dense products like canned foods or metal hardware), shipping with non-ISPM 15 compliant wooden pallets (which triggers biosecurity holds in Australia and fumigation requirements in the US), and failing to include expiration dates on date-sensitive products.
To systematically prevent these errors, Taiwan manufacturers should implement a pre-shipment inspection checklist that covers every FBA labeling and prep requirement. The checklist should be completed by the warehouse team for every outbound FBA shipment and verified by a quality inspector before the container is sealed. Key checkpoints include FNSKU accuracy verification (scan each FNSKU and verify it matches the correct marketplace and product), barcode scannability test (scan every label with a handheld scanner before boxing), poly bag suffocation warning presence and language verification, box weight check (weigh every box against the marketplace limit), pallet label placement verification (four labels per pallet), and shipping label accuracy (correct shipment ID and fulfillment center destination). Investing 15 to 30 minutes in pre-shipment verification prevents receiving delays that can cost days or weeks of lost sales.
Use FNSKU labels. While manufacturer barcodes (UPC/EAN/JAN) save labeling effort, they enable Amazon to commingle your inventory with other sellers' units of the same product. This creates the risk of counterfeit or damaged units from other sellers being fulfilled under your listing, generating negative reviews that harm your brand. FNSKU labeling ensures your inventory is tracked separately. Print FNSKU labels on a thermal transfer printer (Zebra ZD420 or TSC TE200, USD 200 to USD 500) for reliable barcode quality.
US FBA: maximum 50 pounds (22.7 kg) per box, maximum 25 inches on any side. AU FBA: maximum 23 kg per box, maximum 63.5 cm on any side. JP FBA: maximum 15 kg for standard-size products, maximum 40 kg for oversized, maximum dimensions 50 x 60 x 50 cm. Exceeding these limits triggers rejection at the fulfillment center receiving dock, causing shipment delays. Weigh every box before sealing and use the most restrictive limit if preparing mixed shipments.
The requirement is the same across all three marketplaces: any poly bag with an opening of 5 inches (12.7 cm) or more must carry a suffocation warning. The language differs: English for US and AU FBA, Japanese for JP FBA. The minimum font size is 24-point for bags with circumference of 114 cm or more, and 18-point for bags with circumference of 77 to 113 cm. Pre-print the warning on the poly bag or apply a pre-printed warning sticker. Omitting the warning results in prep service charges of USD 1.00 to USD 2.20 per unit at the fulfillment center.
Amazon will mark the shipment as "problem" in Seller Central, and the affected units will be either prepped by Amazon at your expense (USD 1.00 to USD 2.20 per unit for US FBA) or returned to the sender if the issues cannot be resolved at the fulfillment center. Returned shipments incur return shipping costs plus any applicable disposal fees. Severe or repeated labeling violations can trigger an FBA inbound performance alert, which may result in temporary restrictions on your ability to create new inbound shipments until the issues are resolved.
