A suppressed listing means zero sales. Amazon suppresses listings for missing attributes, pricing errors, image policy violations, and category restrictions. Learn how to find suppressed listings and fix each cause.
A suppressed listing is invisible to shoppers — it does not appear in Amazon search results, cannot be added to carts, and generates zero sales while remaining in your inventory. If FBA inventory is in Amazon's warehouse for a suppressed listing, that inventory continues to accrue storage fees even though it cannot sell.
Amazon suppresses listings automatically when they fail to meet minimum content or compliance standards. Suppression is not a manual human review in most cases — it's triggered by automated checks. Understanding the trigger allows you to fix it without waiting for Amazon support.
There are two related but distinct issues: "Suppressed" listings (the listing is not searchable) and "Stranded" inventory (FBA units in the warehouse that have no active listing to sell against — which may be caused by suppression or other listing issues). Both must be resolved quickly to resume sales.
In Seller Central: go to Inventory → Manage All Inventory. Use the filter dropdown at the top and select "Suppressed." All currently suppressed listings will display. Amazon also shows suppressed listing counts on the Seller Central dashboard.
For stranded inventory: Inventory → Fix Stranded Inventory. This report shows FBA units in warehouses that have no active listing. Common causes: listing was deleted after inventory was sent, listing was suppressed or deactivated, or the ASIN was merged or split.
Listing Quality Dashboard (requires Brand Registry): under Brands → Listing Quality, Amazon shows a quality score and specific missing or low-quality attributes for each ASIN. This proactive view lets you fix issues before they become suppressions.
Cause 1 — Missing required attributes: every product category has required attributes (size, material, color, age range for children's products, etc.). Amazon adds new required attributes periodically. Check the suppressed listing's "Fix listing" button — Amazon usually identifies the specific missing field.
Cause 2 — Main image violation: Amazon's main image policy requires a pure white background (RGB 255,255,255), the product occupying at least 85% of the image frame, no text overlays, no additional props, and no lifestyle elements. Listings with main images that violate any of these criteria are suppressed.
Cause 3 — Price alert: if your listing price is significantly higher or lower than Amazon's expected price range for the category (triggering a "potential pricing error"), Amazon may suppress the listing. This protects consumers from accidental pricing errors. To fix: adjust price to a reasonable range, or confirm the price in Seller Central.
Cause 4 — Inactive ASIN: if no seller offers the product (inventory ran out and no merchant-fulfilled option exists), Amazon may mark the ASIN as inactive. Sending more FBA inventory or adding a Merchant-Fulfilled offer reactivates it.
Cause 5 — Category restriction: some categories require approval (Amazon's "Restricted Products" or "Gated Categories") — Grocery, Health, Beauty, Jewelry, Fine Art. If you list in a gated category without approval, the listing is suppressed. Apply for category approval through Seller Central → Catalog → Apply to Sell.
Cause 6 — Safety compliance hold: if Amazon receives a report (from a customer, competitor, or regulatory body) that a product may be unsafe or non-compliant, they may suppressed it pending documentation review. You'll receive an email with a Document Request; respond with testing certificates, compliance documentation, or safety data sheets.
Cause 7 — Duplicate ASIN: if your product's UPC/EAN matches an existing ASIN created by another seller, Amazon may merge the listings or create a suppression conflict. Contact Seller Central to clarify ASIN ownership or request a catalog correction.
Standard fix workflow: identify the suppression reason (Seller Central shows it in most cases) → make the required correction in Edit Listing or the Listing Quality Dashboard → submit the update → allow 24–48 hours for Amazon's system to re-check compliance → confirm the listing is active in Manage Inventory.
For compliance holds requiring documentation: submit the requested documents through Seller Central's Document Request portal. Use official test reports from accredited labs (SGS, Bureau Veritas, TÜV, UL). Include all pages of the test report, not just the summary page. Incomplete submissions are a common cause of extended holds.
Prevention: review all listings monthly using the Listing Quality Dashboard. Before launching a new ASIN, verify all required attributes are complete using Amazon's category-specific listing requirements (available in Seller Central → Help → Listing and Catalog). For images, verify main image compliance before listing — a rejected main image is the single most common preventable suppression cause.
Most suppression fixes (missing attributes, price corrections, image updates) are processed automatically within 24–48 hours. Compliance documentation reviews take longer — typically 3–7 business days after submission. During this waiting period, the listing remains suppressed and inventory continues to accrue storage fees. Submit documentation as early in the business week as possible (Monday or Tuesday) to maximize reviewer availability.
If the reason is not displayed in Manage Inventory, check: (1) the Performance Notifications in Seller Central for any email about the specific ASIN, (2) the Listing Quality Dashboard for quality issues, (3) Account Health for any policy warnings. If still unclear, contact Seller Support and provide the specific ASIN — request they identify the suppression reason with a ticket reference.
Reviews on an ASIN persist through suppression and reactivation — they are not deleted when a listing is suppressed. However, BSR and organic keyword ranking deteriorate during suppression because there are no sales to maintain them. A listing suppressed for more than 2–3 weeks may lose significant ranking and require additional PPC investment to recover. Minimize suppression duration by monitoring and fixing issues within 24 hours of detection.
